What is it about?
In the present paper, an optimization GA model is originally developed to optimal control of surge pressures by minimizing the difference between maximum head and minimum head in WDS. The originality of this study stems from determining, in one run, all PRV parameters including number; and best location, size, set pressure point, opening time, and closing time of each valve. The developed model is verified with the other one from literature and the application is carried out on a real water distribution network of El-Mostakbal City, Egypt.

Why is it important?
The optimization of pressure relief valves parameters shows the effectiveness of pressure relief valve as a protection hydraulic device for decreasing the pressure fluctuations between maximum and minimum heads compared to the system without pressure relief valves installation. The precise determination of a little number of pressure relief valves parameters can more protect the WDS from the action of water hammer and accordingly minimizes the cost of installing extra valves.
