What is it about?

Gender Mainstreaming needs to have more intersectional framework for opening public space for different gender expressions in multiethnic, multi religious, culturally diverse societies. Turkey is presented as the case for the theoretical and conceptual discussion.

Why is it important?

When gender is defined in binary terms of "women and men" it leaves out diverse expressions of gender identities along with complexity of gendered identities that intersect with class, race/ethnicity, religion and sexuality. Invisibility of diversity also makes different disadvantages and oppressions invisible. The article also points out connections between the citizen construction and state which brings alternative perspectives for positive change for inclusive societies.

Perspectives

Gender Mainstreaming is widely used as a policy approach. I hope this article adds to Gender Mainstreaming discussion to question its limitations and ways to improve future policy implementations.
