What is it about?

Individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI), such as schizophrenia, report high rates of exposure to traumatic events. A majority of individuals in forensic psychiatric hospital have SMI; therefore, it is important to accurately assess and treat their trauma-related symptoms in order for them to successfully being treated and re-integrate back into their communities. Unfortunately, the results of the present study found that diagnosis of PTSD in people with SMI is underrepresented. The results highlight the need for improvements in trauma-informed assessment, treatment, and policy.
