What is it about?

Timber pruning mechanisation has received little or no attention in tropical plantation forestry. This paper compares the productivity, efficiency and the costs of using manual saws and electric shears in low pruning operations in pine trees.

Why is it important?

Productivity is driven by a number of factors in a compartment. It is important to analyse each factor fully with respect to the system in use for pruning. Branch size, slope and ergonomic factors are important drivers of productivity, efficiency and costs of pruning operations.

Perspectives

Most of silvicultural operations work is inclined towards quality and economics of pruning. Pruning mechanics rarely appear in publications. We find this study very informative as it inter-relates to the human-machine-biophysical interactions in the forest sector.
