What is it about?
Chances are, the most recent images you’ve seen in the news media were created by freelancers. Some of the biggest news media companies in the U.S., including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, each use freelancers for 50 percent or more of their visual needs. Through in-depth interviews with dozens of freelancers at top international news media outlets, we explored how the shift from a staff-based to a freelancer-based model impacts visual journalists’ learning, mentoring opportunities, and development.

Why is it important?
Using geographically distant freelancers instead of dedicated staff members affects the diversity of one's team, the economic structure of the production process, and the learning and advancement opportunities of the visual journalists.
