Why is it important?
This paper provides a comprehensive, ‘state of the field’ review of the knowledge base regarding bullying of students with ASC. Building on our existing programme of research, we draw upon three theoretical perspectives (ecological systems theory, the general differences framework, and the reciprocal effects peer interaction model) and a large body of international research to examine critical questions of prevalence, risk, experiences and outcomes, and crucially, opportunities for intervention. Our findings bring into sharp relief the discord between the rhetoric of social inclusion espoused in policy and the lived experience of vulnerable children.
