The creative economy has become one of the dominant ideas of our time. How did this come about? What are its implications for how we think about culture? This article shows how it was invented, has circulated, and become embedded into common sense.

Why is it important?
Governments, commentators, consultants and media all talk up the creative economy as a solution to economic problems and the projection of soft power. What would happen if we just stopped assuming it was an entity and start paying attention to the multiplicity of culture once again? For one, we would have to think afresh about the role of policy and the nature of creativity.
