What is it about?

The study looks at nonnative uses produced by Japanese speakers of English. An interesting fact is that native and nonative uses often co-occur in spoken discourse. Using Cook's multi-competence framework and the notion of expressivity, the study seeks to explain the creative uses of the English language.

Why is it important?

The previous studies on Japanese English have not taken up the topic this study focuses on. This is a preliminary study of Japanese English.

Perspectives

More studies needed to be done on this topic but this short article indicates the direction of future research on the future of the English language spoken by people whose first language is not English.
