What is it about?
In the cultivation of organic paddy rice, the weeding of Monochoria vaginalis is the most serious problem. Although many Japanese farmers try to eliminate it by applying rice bran, its use has been limited because its effectiveness varies for unknown reasons. Thus, we analyzed the mechanism using a physical indicator "the settled soil volume in water (SSVW)".

Why is it important?
The application of rice bran dramatically reduced the number of M. vaginalis. The values of SSVW with rice bran were greater than those without rice bran. The analysis of SSVW indicates that the change in soil physical properties following the application of rice bran was one of the factors responsible for the suppression of M. vaginalis growth.
