What is it about?

The study analyzes news reporting of the Great Recession in Slovenian mass media in the 2008-2013 period. We find that both the causes and solutions to the crisis were presented in a way that favours the holders of political and economic power. Reporting of key events was mostly focused on events (as opposed to processes), simplistic juxtapositions (as opposed to analysis) and served to naturalise rather than question establish power structures on the national as well as international level.

Why is it important?

The study offers a systematic analysis of how Slovenian media reported the unfolding Great Recession. By situating media reporting in a broad overview of social, political and economic transformations of Slovenia during the Great Recession, we are able to ground media reporting in broader social trends and better understand how it is shaped by these trends.
