What is it about?

Small-scale variations in environmental factors mostly govern the composition of plant species in tropical dry forests (TDFs). The objective of work described in the present article is to describe species composition of a TDF of India in terms of plant diversity, distribution, and importance value index (IVI) of individual species, and to identify dominant and ubiquitous species.

Why is it important?

Studies in tropical forests suggest that the ecosystem productivity, stability, nutrient dynamics, and invasibility are influenced by plant species number and/or composition. Therefore, the main goal of conservation management is to maintain species diversity in order to prevent future species extinctions. The results of this study are expected to facilitate the decision regarding choice of species in afforestation programs for restoring the tropical dry forest (TDF).

Perspectives

After a lot of hard work in data collection in forest, writing this article was a great pleasure. Through this study, we observed that tropical dry forest (TDF) exhibit patchy distribution of resources, our study indicated that the variations in the composition, distribution, and diversity of the woody species in TDF are evidently on account of different levels of soil moisture content (SMC) as well as habitat heterogeneity.
