What is it about?

The road unevenness is monitored by road maintainers everywhere. They usually gather a detailed elevation map of two wheel tracks at the centimeter scale. Simple mathematical methods were developed to better analyze the impact a specific road has on driver health and safety along with fuel consumption and the vehicle wear.

Why is it important?

Hazards from road unevenness is a worldwide concern. Costs of repairs were repeatedly shown to be only a fraction of the hazard cost to society. Nonetheless, road maintainers worldwide struggle to maintain high quality roads. The tools presented here allow choosing which roads to repair first based on evaluation of their potential for harm.

Perspectives

These tools can be easily implemented using any up to date computer and free software. They run in seconds and provide scales of impact risks in the various categories of interest. I am hoping to implement these tools and the Quebec Ministry of Transports (Canada) in an upcoming research project.
