Why is it important?

It shades light on the unintended consequences of new wealth on the quality of life communities, which is often overshadowed by the improvement in monetary terms. The insecurities caused by Opal mining in Delanta locality is a warning for future potential mining areas wide spread across the country. Unless the unintended consequences of Opal mining are addressed before hand, with the commencement of Opal mining in many parts of Ethiopia in the future will have devastating consequences on the overall security of communities across the country.

Perspectives

This article is the output of a research work carried in 2014 with full sponsorship of Wollo University in Ethiopia. During the field work the author has traveled to risk landscapes with his students to realize the day to day risks the miners were surviving. So, in writing this article the author hope that he has given voice to the untold stories of the perseverance of the miners on the one hand, the community negatively affected by the mining sector on the other. The author trusts the article will motivate other researchers to continue the task further.
