What is it about?

Intensive Interaction is a communication approach to support people who do not use any formal form of communication. This study used interviews and questionnaires to find out the views of day service staff. It explores what they perceive the benefits of the approach to be but also the barriers such as lack of time, training and staff.

Why is it important?

Day service staff saw great benefits to the people they used the Intensive Interaction with. However, other tasks were given priority and therefore they were not using Intensive Interaction as much they wanted to. Having staff members identified in promoting the approach, Advanced Practitioners, and support from speech therapists enabled the approach to happen more regularly.
