This article focuses on the relations of the medici dukes with the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the 16th c., exploring the complex backdrop to the diplomatic negotiations that took place over the 1570s and 1590s.

Why is it important?
Building on hitherto unexplored archival evidence, this article brings to light the critical role of the wool manufacturers and merchants over the diplomatic negotiations, a significant aspect which has not been discussed in much detail in the existing literature.
Perspectives
The article highlights important aspects of the Medici-Ottoman diplomacy in the sixteenth century in light of the evidence from the archival findings. I believe it is an important contribution to the field.
