What is it about?
Due to the sharp decrease in stocks of Caspian Kutum, artificial propagation for enhancing and restocking the fish has been carried out since 1981 by the Iran Fisheries Organization. We compared the changes in length, weight and fecundity of mature females of the Kutum for the periods 1948–1950, 1974 and 2007 in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea.

Why is it important?
Fecundity is one of the primary parameters in quantitative estimations of spawning capacity and is used as an input parameter when assessing spawning stock biomass. Our findings show that the potential fecundity of the Kutum for the three periods decreased from 106,800 over 74,600 to 64,400 eggs. The reduction of fecundity is apparently the consequence of the shift towards smaller fish size.
