What is it about?

This article is a theoretical review about all the studies published from 1940 devoted to the relationship between psychological factors and diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma.

Why is it important?

This is the fisrt theoretical review in the field of psychoophthalmology. Three main types of contributions have been arised in thes topic: Those related to the emotional consequendes of blindness, the studies devoted to he effect of psycholgocial factors to intraocular pressure (a critical factor in the development of glaucoma), and the factors underlying the adherence of the patients to the medical treatment.

Perspectives

The authors hope that this paper acts as a boost in the development of a new subfield in health psychology that we have named as psychoophthalmology
