What is it about?

The aim of the current study was to analyse the influence of the timing of training and matches, and match location, on sleep pattern and nocturnal cardiac autonomic activity in female soccer players.

Why is it important?

It is noteworthy that there are no longitudinal studies in the literature analyzing objective sleep variables and HRV indices across multiple night-training days, match days, and resting days, as well as in different match locations (i.e., away-matches vs. home-matches) in trained female athletes.

Perspectives

In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that time of day for soccer practice (i.e., training at night), and match location (i.e., away matches)may cause disruption in sleep patterns and/or autonomic cardiac activity in female soccer players. It is suggested that athletes and coaches organize the training program not only according to match schedules but also aiming to improve sleep routines for optimal recovery
