In this paper, we analyse how university ideals of close, direct linkages between teaching and research are confronted with pragmatic practice.

Why is it important?
Universities are very keen to signal their committment to close linkages between research and teaching. In practise, however, the bulk of teaching activities is often delegated to faculty and staff with limited research activity. This paper shows that in Sweden, a full two thirds of all teaching activities are handled by teachers with low or no research activity of their own.
