What is it about?
Professional songwriters play a crucial but often overlooked role in the creation of popular music. By collaborating with artists, they contribute to the melodies, lyrics, and production that shape some of the biggest hits. This study examines how these collaborations work, drawing insights from interviews with professional songwriters featured on the Sodajerker on Songwriting podcast. We propose a spectrum of collaboration, from independent songwriting to co-writing with artists and supporting their creative process. Our findings show how collaboration enhances the quality of songs, builds trust, and blends artistic vision with commercial success.
