What is it about?

This paper presents staff experiences of healthy work environment (HWE) indicators at primary care units (PCU) in Sweden. The results of the the fifty in-dept interviews can assist in understanding why some PCU function better than others. Both managers and staff are encouraged to actively work not only to create and sustain an HWE but also to promote organisational virtuousness, employee commitment, joy at work and to increase the performance at work, which is of benefit to staff, patients and society.

Why is it important?

The experiences of an HWE by stafff at well-functioning PCUs indicates the importance of HWE for the performance of the PCU. The responsibility of creating a HWE is shared between management and staff, including challenges that the staff and organisation need to meet create and maintain a HWE. The results suggest it could be to address issues of organisational virtuousness, employee commitment and joy at work.

Perspectives

This paper presents results from well-functioning PCUs and it would be of interest to explore how staff at less well-functioning PCUs experience organisational virtuousness, employee commitment and joy at work.
