What is it about?

This paper summarizes data demonstrating the susceptibility of high-strength and corrosion-resistant stainless steels to fracture when they are exposed to typical environments found in oil and gas production systems. The main reason for the failure, that generally occurs for loading conditions well below the material's capacity, is associated with the absorption of hydrogen.

Why is it important?

It shows current limitations of these materials in specific environments highlighting how each variable contributes to this type of failure.

Perspectives

Selected surface modification techniques can be successfully used to prevent this type of failure.
