What is it about?
Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for all forms of life. We use molecular techniques (DGGE and qPCR) to analyze the bacteria associated with nitrogen fixation and bacteria and archaea associated with ammonia oxidation in two tropical caves of Brazil, one in limestone rock and other in sandstone rock.

Why is it important?
Our findings indicate that ammonia oxidizer archaea predominate in cave environment in comparison with ammonia oxidizer bacteria. This is important in speleological and microbiological studies to understand nitrogen cycle in cave ecosystem.
