What is it about?

Arsenic was found in secondary iron minerals, which were precipitated onto microbial extracellular structures, found in a small pool inside an underground gold mine

Why is it important?

All inorganic forms of arsenic are highly toxic. In solution, arsenic is available to the biota, but if it is in the solid phase provided by the secondary iron minerals, it is not available to the biota.

Perspectives

This work could inspire the development of systems for biological cleaning of arsenic-polluted water.
