What is it about?

Kerava Solar Village was built in early 1980s, with a seasonal thermal energy storage, storing solar heat from summer to winter. The storage efficiency was high, but the collector field was undersized to give a high total solar fraction.

Why is it important?

The seasonal storage concept was novel and provided a high performance. It consisted of a long-term storage part (boreholes) and a short-term storage (water cavern).

Perspectives

Kerava Solar Village represented one of the first seasonal storage systems built in the world. The storage connect was unique, and still topical. This could work e.g. for power-to-heat schemes
