What is it about?

Starch industry generates effluents containing residual starch. To clean the effluent with the purpose to reuse the water and recover the starch by membrane separation is an alternative technology.

Why is it important?

Effluents containing organic materials becomes an environmental issue due to unpleasant odors and proliferation of bacterial contamination. Then, it can be turned into a health risk.

Perspectives

The findings of this project showed that any starch processing industry could apply this method for cleaning wastewater. Using low trans-membrane pressure combined with a reasonable membrane area, helps to faster the process, because there is a lower clogging effect then the membrane permeability is kept stable.
