Recent papers detailing biomedical uses of polymer and ceramic coatings are described. The six main applications areas are: orthopaedic materials, cardiovascular stents, antibacterial surfaces, drug delivery, tissue engineering and biosensors.

Why is it important?
Polymer and ceramic coatings are enable to modify the performance characteristics of bulk materials, adding particular advantages that that them attractive in the medical field. For example, these coatings can add enhanced corrosion protection, antiwear, antibacterial and biocompatibility properties.
