What is it about?

This paper highlights the effect of protuberances / tubercles on the wind turbine performance. Different parameters were considered in the present studies, such as protuberance amplitude and wavelength, stall inception characteristics, power coefficient, aerodynamic characteristics, and noise emission.

Why is it important?

The stall inception deteriorates the wind turbine performance. The leading-edge protuberances generate a pair of vortices that help supply the momentum and delay/eliminate the stall inception.

Perspectives

The protuberances help stabilize the wind turbine operation, especially at low wind speeds and fluctuating wind conditions. The protuberance amplitude dominates over the wavelength. The protuberances also reduce the noise emission and the intensity of the stall inception.
