What is it about?

Funeral home workers may be exposed to chemicals in the air while preparing bodies for burial. These chemicals can come from embalming fluids and other products used during embalming and autopsy procedures. If preparation rooms are small, poorly ventilated, or have exhaust fans that are not used, these chemicals can build up in the air and may affect workers’ health. This study looked at indoor air quality in the preparation rooms of all three funeral homes operating in Grenada. The research team measured total volatile organic compounds, often called TVOCs. TVOCs are a group of airborne chemicals that can be used as a general indicator of chemical pollution in indoor air. Measurements were taken during embalming and autopsy sessions, and the researchers also looked at room size, ventilation systems, temperature, humidity, and work practices. The study found large differences between the three funeral homes. One funeral home had very high chemical levels in the preparation room. This was linked to a small room, closed-door work practices, and an exhaust fan that was not used during embalming. A second funeral home had lower levels, likely because the room was larger and the exhaust fan was used continuously. The third funeral home had the lowest levels because it had both intake and exhaust ventilation operating during procedures. The main message from this study is that good ventilation matters. Properly designed and consistently used ventilation systems can greatly reduce airborne chemical buildup in funeral home preparation rooms. The study also highlights the importance of using appropriate protective equipment, monitoring air quality, training staff, and safely handling embalming chemicals. These findings are especially important for small island developing states and other resource-limited settings, where funeral homes may not always have modern ventilation systems or routine air-quality monitoring. Improving ventilation and worker protection can help reduce health risks for embalmers and other funeral home staff.

Why is it important?

This study is unique because it is one of the first to examine air quality and chemical exposure inside funeral home preparation rooms in Grenada and, more broadly, in a small island developing state. While embalmers are known to work with chemicals that can affect health, very little published research has focused on funeral homes in Caribbean settings. This study helps fill that gap by providing real-world evidence from all three funeral homes operating in Grenada. A major strength of the study is that it did not simply measure chemical levels in isolation. It connected those measurements to practical workplace conditions, including room size, ventilation systems, whether exhaust fans were used, temperature, and work practices during embalming and autopsy procedures. This makes the findings especially useful because they show not only that chemical levels can vary greatly between funeral homes, but also why those differences may occur. The study found that preparation rooms with poor or inactive ventilation had much higher levels of airborne chemical pollutants, while rooms with continuous intake and exhaust ventilation had much lower levels. This is an important finding because it points to a practical and achievable solution: better ventilation. Even in resource-limited settings, consistently using existing exhaust fans, improving airflow, and maintaining ventilation systems can help reduce chemical buildup and better protect workers. The difference this study can make is therefore very practical. Funeral home directors can use the findings to improve room design, ventilation practices, worker training, and protective equipment use. Occupational health professionals and public health authorities can also use the study as evidence to support guidelines, inspections, and safer workplace standards for funeral service workers. The study also raises awareness of a group of workers whose occupational health risks are often overlooked. Embalmers and funeral home staff perform essential work, but their exposure to airborne chemicals may not receive the same attention as risks in hospitals, laboratories, or industrial workplaces. By documenting these exposures in Grenada, this research helps make their working conditions more visible and provides a foundation for prevention. Overall, this evaluation of the air quality of funeral home preparation rooms matters because it turns air-quality measurements into clear workplace lessons. It shows that funeral home chemical exposure is not only a technical issue, but a preventable occupational health concern. Its findings are relevant not only to Grenada, but also to other Caribbean and resource-limited settings where funeral homes may face similar challenges with ventilation, monitoring, and worker protection.

Perspectives

For me, the value of this study lies in its practical message: safer air in funeral home preparation rooms does not always require highly sophisticated equipment or major financial investment. While advanced air-monitoring systems and modern ventilation designs are certainly useful, this research shows that meaningful improvements can begin with basic, actionable workplace changes. Funeral home preparation rooms are important workspaces where embalmers and support staff may be exposed to airborne chemicals released during embalming and related procedures. In many small island and resource-limited settings, however, these risks may go unmeasured, under-recognized, or accepted as part of the job. This study challenges that assumption. It shows that exposure can vary greatly from one facility to another and that these differences are closely linked to practical factors such as room size, airflow, whether exhaust fans are used, whether doors remain closed, and how consistently protective practices are followed. One of the most important lessons is that existing resources can often be used more effectively. For example, an exhaust fan that is already installed but not regularly used cannot protect workers. A preparation room that remains closed for thermal comfort may allow chemical vapors to build up. Chemical spills that are not cleaned promptly can contribute to poor air quality. These are not problems that always require expensive technology to begin addressing. They require awareness, routine practices, training, supervision, and a workplace culture that treats air quality as a worker-safety priority. This study also demonstrates that simple monitoring of total volatile organic compounds can provide useful information, even when more specialized equipment for measuring individual chemicals such as formaldehyde is not available. Although such screening does not replace formal exposure assessment, it can help funeral home operators identify problem areas, compare rooms, evaluate ventilation practices, and make informed decisions about immediate corrective actions. The findings are especially relevant because many funeral homes in the Caribbean and other small island developing states may face similar limitations. They may not have dedicated occupational hygienists, advanced ventilation engineers, or large budgets for facility upgrades. Yet this study shows that practical interventions are still possible. These include consistently operating exhaust fans during embalming, improving intake and exhaust airflow, avoiding practices that trap contaminants indoors, maintaining ventilation equipment, using appropriate respirators and gloves, restricting unnecessary entry into preparation rooms, and training workers to recognize chemical hazards. In this sense, the study is not only about measuring air pollution. It is about turning measurement into prevention. It provides funeral home directors, workers, public health officials, and occupational safety practitioners with evidence that can be acted on. Even modest improvements in ventilation, work practices, and protective equipment use may reduce chemical buildup and improve the working environment for embalmers and other funeral home staff. The broader value of this research is that it makes an often-overlooked occupational health issue visible. Funeral service workers perform essential and sensitive work, yet their workplace exposures are rarely discussed in public health or occupational safety planning. By documenting air-quality conditions in Grenadian funeral homes, this study provides a foundation for practical change. It shows that protecting workers does not have to wait until perfect resources are available. It can begin with better awareness, better use of existing controls, and a commitment to making preparation rooms safer places to work.
