What is it about?
Land consolidation involves readjusting and re-organizing land parcels and land rights, usually to accommodate infrastructural projects, improve agricultural production or develop solutions for environmental needs. This study looks into documented evidence from Germany and China with the aim to derive a better understanding of what land consolidation and land governance really is in practice.

Why is it important?
While land consolidation is often only associated with agricultural improvements, the article demonstrates that gradually land consolidation is more related to addressing environmental concerns, improving working and living conditions in rural areas and spatial development as a whole. The implication is that land governance - visible through land laws and land policies - need to adapt accordingly.
Perspectives
Comparing land consolidation and land governance practices and strategies in Germany and China helps to derive a more generic framework of how to look at the conceptual relation and inter-dependence of land consolidation and land governance. t took some time to collect relevant documented evidence on cases in both countries, and to infer a conceptual relation, but ultimately this study helped to develop a framework which can be used for further studies in this field.
