Why is it important?
The article examines the challenges of Colombia's first leftist government, under President Gustavo Petro, to address human rights and environmental protection in rural areas of the country where local power brokers and armed groups are used to being in control.
Perspectives
I was with the community studied in this article at the time of the murders, and had spent a year living and working in this community in 2009. So while this is not a personal reflection, the content has deep significance for me.
