What is it about?

The South African national water department has been collecting and archiving water quality data since the early 1970s. The data set is large, with more than 20 million results, so a simplified online inventory was developed, that users can query by site name or location.

Why is it important?

The methodology behind the online inventories may be useful to people planning a similar system. It shows the advantages and limitations of "home-grown" applications.

Perspectives

While this is a description of an online system, I hope that the examples will encourage people to try using programming environments such as R to explore their own large datasets, if they have not already done so.
