What is it about?

Researchers conventionally approach questions of political representation with groups in mind: be this shared preferences of demographic characteristics. In the article I present a new way to approach questions of political representation at the individual level. The individual rather the legislature is at the centre of the analysis.

Why is it important?

Different ways to understand and measure political representation exist, but one has been glossed over. In the article I show why it sometimes makes sense to put the individual at the centre of the analysis of political representation.

Perspectives

In their review of different understandings of political representation, Golder and Stramski mention what I refer to as "individual representation" in a footnote. Like others before them, they did not consider it relevant. I disagree: individual representation is probably quite important for understanding political efficacy or feelings of representation, and now that studies of descriptive representation increasingly pay attention to intersectionality, individual representation offers a flexible approach.
