What is it about?

This paper is about transformative learning using threshold concepts. Based on how information is interpreted and managed, the philosophy of information influences our states of being and becoming which have an impact on our understanding of the information world. Philosophical aspects of being and becoming in relation to transformation are discussed, and threshold concepts are explored as a means of achieving transformative learning.

Why is it important?

It is important because the objective of learning is not just to gain knowledge but to achieve the desired transformation in character or behaviour by applying the knowledge within ourselves. Threshold concepts help to achieve the desired transformative learning.

Perspectives

This paper distinguishes the philosophical perspectives of being and becoming. It acknowledges that the information around us as 'beings' help to contribute towards learning, growth, development and ultimately to the evolvement of an improved 'self'. Illustrations are used to support discussions about transformative learning and how threshold concepts can help to achieve the desired transformation.
