What is it about?
“Awakening the Creative Problem Solver,” tells the story of Karli, a sixth-grade student, as she participated in an instructional unit on the topic of fantastical creature sculptures. This article presents some of the creative problem solving strategies implemented within the unit and analyzes how each strategy contributed to Karli’s “awakening” as a creative problem solver and individual.

Why is it important?
“Awakening the Creative Problem Solver” is the result of a case study that was conducted to address the creative struggles my middle school students experienced during open-ended assignments as well as to gain a better understanding of their creative problem-solving process. Through my inquiry, I found that my students’ responses to the creative problem solving strategies were the result of a complex layering of thought processes resulting in synthesis of experiences and personal development.
