What is it about?
Nowadays, microstructure regulation and performance enhancement of diamond is a topic of broad interest. We report here the synthesis of diamond with preferentially oriented nanotwin bundles via direct phase transformation of superaligned multi-walled carbon nanotube films under high temperature and high pressure. The preferentially oriented twin bundles endow diamond significant mechanical anisotropy. Meanwhile, benefited from the ultrafine twin thickness of ca. 2.9 nm, an extremely high Knoop hardness of 233 GPa was achieved in the direction perpendicular to the twin bundles.

Why is it important?
Our findings verifies the hardening effect in diamond via nanostructuring and provide valuable insights on microstructure design and modification for diamond and related materials, contributing to further properties tuning in the future.
