What is it about?
We show that electric utilities can reduce the air pollution impacts of power plants, on an hour-by-hour basis, by shifting the load a little bit among different power plants. Because the pollutants that impact human health are formed by the interaction of power plant emissions with atmospheric conditions, relatively small changes to power system operations, mainly on a few bad air days, can substantially reduce human health impacts, at low cost.
