What is it about?

This paper presents a low-cost smartphone-powered test for detecting cassava brown streak disease directly in the field. By combining simple testing with digital data collection, it could help farmers and authorities monitor outbreaks and protect an important food crop.

Why is it important?

This work turns a simple rapid test into a quantitative, battery-free diagnostic powered by a smartphone. Field-tested in Tanzania, it delivers results in about 10 minutes for under US$1, helping farmers and authorities detect outbreaks earlier, map disease spread, and respond faster.

Perspectives

I hope this work shows how accessible technology can help farmers and authorities monitor outbreaks, protect crops and strengthen food security. For me, it also demonstrates how simple, connected tools can bring high-quality testing closer to the communities that need it most.
