What is it about?
This study looks at how all the cities in the United States, from the smallest to the biggest, balance the trade-off between focusing on a few economic activities and diversifying them. For nearly two centuries, we study how they grow and change, studying occupational and technological transformation since the very origin of American cities.

Why is it important?
This insight is timely, as many cities are attempting to reinvent themselves following industrial decline, automation, and the pandemic. Our work provides a benchmark for realistic, sustainable diversification strategies.
Perspectives
Working on this paper made me rethink on how cities collectively grow, and how they manage to coordinate a multitude of jobs.
