What is it about?

Gasdermins are an ancient family of molecules capable of forming membrane pores to induce cell death, which plays important roles in host defense and inflammatory disorders. We discovered that mammalian gasdermin D is modified by a lipid molecule. The attachment of lipid promotes gasdermin D-mediated cell death and inflammation.

Why is it important?

Our study reveals that lipid modification may be a shared regulatory mechanism for the gasdermin family of pore-forming proteins, which suggests potential avenues of therapeutically targeting lipid modifications in inflammatory disorders.

Perspectives

The publication of this work has been a long-time coming. I am deeply appreciative of the optimism and persistence by all the authors and other collaborators. We hope that this work will open up new field of investigation into the roles of lipid modifications in cell death and inflammatory disorders.
