What is it about?
Chemical upcycling of plastic usually produces low-value energy products, although equipped with novel and sophisticated catalysts. Is it possible to have a strategy that has high conversion, selectivity, and product values? This paper exhibit a degradation-upcycling (Deg-Up) strategy selectively converting waste PS to desirable high-value chemicals. We also conducted a techno-economic analysis to confirm its practicability.

Why is it important?
Conventional plastic recycling and upcycling approaches have low profitability and rely on sophisticated catalysts. Our work shows that chemical upcycling can be economically feasible and produce high-value chemicals with high conversion and selectivity over the common and inexpensive catalysts.
