What is it about?

Really interesting dynamics are observed when a cylinder undergoing vortex-induced vibrations (VIV), impacts with a rigid stopper. In particular, we could see dynamically rich phenomena like period-adding cascades, multi-stability and period-doubling routes to chaos.

Why is it important?

Vibro-impact dynamics of large structures in the presence of fluid flows is inadequately explored, especially when it comes to the complex interplay between smooth and non-smooth dynamics. Such dynamics shed light to the fundamental understanding around the topic as well as demonstrate stability aspects and accuracies of analysis approaches.

Perspectives

With the rise of offshore renewable energy, engineering systems will have to engage with more nonlinearities over their operational lifetime. This is an example how complex and rich dynamic phenomena will dominate the sector. Despite the complexities, the authors really enjoyed how idealized problems can lead to so much understanding and insights to such systems.
