What is it about?
This paper reviews the development of metasurfaces in LEDs so far. Three aspects of light extraction, angle change, and polarization modulation are described in detail according to different applications of metasurfaces in LEDs. The current state of metasurface integration in LEDs is succinctly outlined, while offering insights into future development opportunities.

Why is it important?
In LEDs, all the light emitted from the light-emitting layer, only a small portion of the outcoupling mode contributes to the EQE, and most of the light is lost through SPP mode, waveguide mode, substrate mode, and parasitic absorption losses. The working principle of the metasurface makes it possible to reduce these losses in LEDs, assisting in regulating the light extraction capacity and improving the EQE of the device.
