What is it about?
We demonstrate in this paper that the broadly used band gap gradient method to reduce recombination at the back contact in CIGS solar cell is not a gradual band gap change. Based on cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy, we show that instead of a gradient, discrete phases interlace in the bulk of the material leading to an apparent gradient.

Why is it important?
In addition, we found that the high band gap phase that forms towards the back of the absorber is detrimental for the solar cell.
