What is it about?

We combine the advantages, and overcome the limitations, of two different techniques used to calculate the aerodynamic force using flow-field data. This new method also leads to the formulation of a neat far-field expression of the aerodynamic force, valid for unsteady, viscous and compressible flows.

Why is it important?

Inaccuracies frequently reported when using Lamb-vector-based force methods are eliminated by the new approach, which also allows the computation of lift and lift-induced drag, usually not obtained using thermodynamic-based methods. Our combined thermodynamic/Lamb-vector approach also provides a new far-field expression of the pressure forces acting on a body immersed in a viscous and compressible fluid, a starting point for new force decomposition techniques.

Perspectives

Besides improving the accuracy of Lamb-vector-based force decomposition approaches, the proposed unified method and the new formula could be used as a basis of future Research efforts, aiming to identify physical and phenomenological correlations for the different terms of the new pressure force expression, as well as to investigate on possible links with other force breakdown approaches (e.g. Partial Pressure Fields and/or Exergy methods).
