What is it about?
Transition metal X-ides (TMX, including oxides, nitrides, carbides, and hydroxides) are a class of important electrocatalysts for many applications. However, the surface states of TMXs under electrocatalytic conditions were usually not clear. In this study, we theoretically analyzed 14 typical TMX surfaces and found that many of them are far from a stoichiometric pristine surface under electrochemical conditions.

Why is it important?
The state of an electrocatalyst's surface was often overlooked in catalyst studies. Our work finds that before analyzing the activity of an electrocatalyst (especially TMX electrocatalyst), the surface state should be analyzed beforehand.
