What is it about?

We developed a device that is able to measure the charge and calculate the mass of micron sized dust particles. Test particles were injected into our detector system producing a signal waveform that is amplified and processed. An electric field is required influence the particles and alter the waveform in measurable ways. Particle detection limits are discussed and future improvements are explored.

Why is it important?

Studying the dust on Mars is a key driver for our research. An accurate understanding of particle charge and mass distributions is vital for rover success and for future manned missions. This data is critical for developing accurate forecasting models of dust storms.

Perspectives

As an undergraduate student, it has been an amazing experience to do meaningful research that will potentially impact the future. This research seeks to fill in the gaps that exist in our current understanding of Mars and the drivers of its climate. Future iterations of our design will increase detection limits and prepare the instrument for integration in a future mission to Mars.
