What is it about?

Sensing is ubiquitous in our everyday life. We’re surrounded by and interact with sensors on a daily basis that provide us with valuable information. Critical decisions based on sensor data often require high precision measurements of physical quantities. We have proposed the use of special quantum states of light that can increase the precision in estimating the concentration of chiral solutions.

Why is it important?

The concentration of chiral solutions is a key parameter in a variety of industrial processes. By using engineered quantum states of light, we show that it is possible to measure concentration with up to four times higher precision than conventional methods. This sensing method performs best in the challenging scenario of sensing low concentration solutions. This enables a new route to improved pharmaceutical screening, material and food processing.
