What is it about?
Utilizing space as a new degree of freedom, in addition to wavelength, polarization and intensity, will increase transmission capacity of optical communications systems. In this paper, we use Hermite-Gaussian modes for space division multiplexing of three data streams through a multicore fiber.

Why is it important?
Our findings show that using spatial Hermite-Gaussian modes as data carriers, we are able to multiplex three channels through a multicore fiber.
Perspectives

A recent paradigm in optical communications is the utilization of spatial modes as an additional attribute for increasing the data-carrying capacity of a communication channel.
