What is it about?

A group of researchers writes short essays about their initial contacts with Otto E. Rössler, who is one of the pioneers of chaos theory. Otto published some seminal theoretical papers on simple models showing chaotic dynamics in 1976. These papers have had a tremendous effect in the field of non-linear dynamics and the formulation of the theory of chaos. The essays are written to celebrate the 80th birthday of Otto Rössler on May 20, 2020.

Why is it important?

Together these essays form an important contribution to the early history of chaos research.

Perspectives

I visited Otto Rössler and his institute in Tübingen for six weeks in early 1976. when he had just submitted his first paper on chaos in simple models of (bio)chemical systems. During my visit Otto explained the basics of chaos theory to me and this knowledge enabled me to analyze experimental data that I had obtained and understand that they represented the first example of chaos in a (bio)chemical system.
